چکیده

Near-real time altimetry products from ENVISAT RA2, Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon tandem mission are validated for the North Sea and Baltic Sea region to assess the feasibility of using the data for operational purposes. The coverage of the satellite data shows that all Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon observations in the Baltic Sea are currently discarded in the processing of the data. The spatial scales of the sea level variability are determined from a combination of satellite altimetry and tide data. The characteristic time scales are derived from hourly observations from 45 tide gauges. The near-real time data are compared against delayed satellite data and output from a 2-dimensional storm surge model to derive error estimates of 13 cm for ENVISAT, 8 cm for Jason 1 and 8.2 for the T/P tandem mission. The feasibility of using the data for operational purposes is discussed for different sub regions.

Optimize Coastal Ocean Prediction System (COPS)

Mooers (1999) defined ”coastal ocean” to include a 200 nautical mile wide Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), determined by United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). This covers a major part of the European coastal seas (Mediterranean, North Sea, Irish Sea, Baltic Sea) and part of European shelf seas. Since EEZ is also of high national interests in marine resource exploitation and en...

Real-time sea-level gauge observations and operational oceanography.

The contribution of tide-gauge data, which provide a unique monitoring of sea-level variability along the coasts of the world ocean, to operational oceanography is discussed in this paper. Two distinct applications that both demonstrate tide-gauge data utility when delivered in real-time are illustrated. The first case details basin-scale operational model validation of the French Mercator oper...

Comparison of the X-TRACK altimetry estimated currents with moored ADCP and HF radar observations on the West Florida Shelf

The performance of coastal altimetry over a wide continental shelf is assessed using multiple-year ocean current observations by moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) and high-frequency (HF) radar on the West Florida Shelf. Across-track, surface geostrophic velocity anomalies, derived from the X-TRACK along-track sea level anomalies are compared with the near surface current vector c...

Investigation of Geostrophic and Ekman Surface Current Using Satellite Altimetry Observations and Surface Wind in Persian Gulf and Oman Sea

The rise of satellite altimetry is a revolution in the ocean sciences. Due to its global coverage and its high resolution, altimetry classically outperforms in situ water level measurement. Ekman and geostrophic currents are large parts of the ocean’s current, playing a vital role in global climate variations. According to the classic oceanography, Ekman and geostrophic currents can be calculat...

Satellite earth observation in operational oceanography

The role and contribution of satellite data in operational oceanography is reviewed, with emphasis on northern European seas. The possibility to observe various ocean parameters and processes by existing satellite sensors, such as optical instruments, infrared radiometers, passive Ž . microwave radiometers, and active microwave systems altimeter, scatterometer, SAR is discussed. The basic param...
